Lourdes opened the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday evening earning its first result ever against a NAIA top-25 program, battling third-ranked Davenport to a 1-1 draw in double overtime at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
"I thought we played great tonight," head coach
Barry Spitzer said afterwards. "I'm extremely proud of the team from the defensive side to the attacking end. People stepped up and we played as a team. I'm extremely optimistic moving forward after this result against a very solid team."
Â
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (Tamworth, England/Queen Elizabeth's Mercian H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front just 10:31 into the contest, dribbling through defenders before firing a blast from 25 yards out past Panther netminder Aaron Orban.
Â
Davenport (6-1-1, 0-0-1 WHAC) evened the match with 18:39 to play before intermission as Lourdes failed to clear a corner off of the foot of TJ Ifaturoti and Tyler Collishaw found the back of the goal.
Â
The contest remained knotted the rest of the way through the second half and into a pair of overtimes. The Panthers had a pair of opportunities with around 10 minutes remaining in regulation, once hitting the post while a minute later another shot hit the crossbar before
Andre White (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) made the save on the rebound.
Â
Lourdes had a chance with under four minutes to play as
Demaro Fowler's (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) shot was saved,
Carlos Viganoni (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Western H.S.) had his rebound attempt blocked, and Kirchoff-Sleet's effort was saved by a diving defender on the backline.
Â
The Panthers had one more quality chance in the second overtime, but a header off of a corner kick was saved by the Gray Wolf defense.
Â
Davenport outshot Lourdes 20-10 for the match, but held just a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers also held a 10-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Â
White made three saves in relief of an injured
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.) in just under 52 minutes of action while Cedillo made one stop in his 58 minutes in net. Orban made four saves for the Panthers.
Â
Lourdes (5-0-1, 0-0-1) will begin a five-match road trip on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Aquinas Athletic Field.
