An Aquinas goal midway through the second half proved to be the only scoring on Wednesday evening as the Saints handed Lourdes its first loss of the season 1-0 at the Aquinas Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Peter Brandenburg connected sent a cross to Luke Larson, who tallied his third goal of the season with 25:19 remaining to the Saints' lone tally of the night.
"I thought we played hard enough tonight," head coach
Barry Spitzer said afterwards. "We just couldn't find the final pass to create the opportunities that we needed to."
Lourdes held a 13-12 advantage on the night in total shot attempts, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, but Ty VandePoel made all five stops for Aquinas (2-4-3, 1-1 WHAC) to earn the clean sheet.
The Gray Wolves also had a 9-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but could not find the back of the net for the equalizer.
Andre White (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) made the only save for Lourdes, doing so in the second half.
Lourdes (5-1-1, 0-1-1) will continue its three-match road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to face Indiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Warrior Field.
