Lourdes wrapped up its opening Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series of the season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair of games 1-0 and 6-1 to Davenport at Farmers Athletics Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Anthony DiPonio's home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the Panthers provided the only offense in the opener.Â
Â
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) allowed just five hits over six innings of work while making his collegiate debut for the Gray Wolves on the hill.Â
Ben Richard (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) and
Mike Vomastek (Livonia, Ohio/Stevenson H.S.) each tossed scoreless innings of relief to keep Lourdes in the game.
Â
"Rogge pitched like a veteran," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "He only made one mistake the whole day and that was to the first batter of the game. It's a tough loss for him. Our bullpen came on and did a really good job as well."
Â
Krystien Johnson-Batillana tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win (1-0) for Davenport, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Â
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) tallied two of the five hits the Gray Wolves tallied in the contest, but Lourdes was never able to put two runners on base at the same time in the game.
Â
DiPonio went 3-for-4 to lead the Panthers offensively while Jeremy Vasquez added two hits as the duo combined for five of the seven hits against Lourdes hurlers in the opener.
Â
"We played some really good baseball and made some great plays defensively," Snow added.
Â
In game two, Lourdes took its first lead of the season in the second inning.Â
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) singled and scored on a two-out double by
Dan Johnson (Westland, Mich./Franklin H.S.).
Â
That would be the only run the Gray Wolves would score. Davenport (3-0, 3-0 WHAC) tied the game with a two-out hit in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good in the fourth. With two outs, a walk and three straight hits plated three runs as the Panthers built a 4-1 advantage.
Â
Davenport added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth and let the pitching staff do the rest. Andrew Clink, who pitched five innings of scoreless relief, earned the win (1-0), allowing just one hit and fanning four out of the bullpen.
Â
"We had poor offensive execution all weekend," Snow said. "That being said, their pitchers did a nice job of mixing their pitches well. We didn't take advantage of their mistakes."
Â
Frank Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) in relief, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, and three hits in the one inning he worked.
Â
Barker had the only multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes managed just six hits in the contest. Luke Lalumia went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in to pace the Panthers.
Â
Lourdes (0-3, 0-3) will head home to Mercy Field next Saturday as the Gray Wolves begin a three-game weekend series against Indiana Tech. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
