Anthony Swanigan (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) scored a career-high 27 points on Wednesday night, but Lourdes was unable to pull off the upset, falling to 25
th-ranked Northwestern Ohio 92-79 at Racer Gymnasium in Lima, Ohio.
Swanigan, whose previous best effort at Lourdes was 22 points last season, made 10-of-13 shots from the floor, including all three three-point attempts, and was one of four Gray Wolves to finish in double figures.
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) added 20 points while
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon H.S.) and
Malik Thurman (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins H.S.) chipped in 13 and 10 points respectively.
"Tonight was possibly our best offensive game of the season," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "We had four guys in double figures and some great individual performances. Unfortunately, UNOH can be a dynamic scoring team when you make mistakes against them, and we made far too many. When you score 79 points it should be enough to win any conference game, but we had too many lapses on defense, and as a result, we cost ourselves an opportunity to have a chance to win the game."
Lourdes jumped out to an early eight-point lead, 21-13, following a jumper by
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) with under nine minutes to play in the opening stanza. The Racers answered with an 18-4 run to take the lead, one the hosts would not relinquish the rest of the night. Northwestern Ohio would take a 43-37 lead into the locker room.
Out of intermission the Gray Wolves were able to pull within three, 46-43, on a layup by Johnson, but Northwestern Ohio would go on another run, this time a 38-17 spurt over 11 minutes, to pull away. Lourdes closed the game on a 19-8 run for the game's final margin.
Lourdes shot 51.8% from the floor, including 44.4% from long range while making eight three-pointer. Northwestern Ohio connected at a 56.7% clip, drained 11-of-22 triples (50%), and committed just six turnovers.
Lawrence Jackson led Northwestern Ohio (13-4, 8-1 WHAC) with 25 points while Corbin Pierce added 22 points for the Racers.
After playing four of its last five games against ranked foes, Lourdes (2-14, 1-8) remains on the road Saturday afternoon to battle Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Ridler Field House.
