Lourdes saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday evening, dropping a 25-20, 25-12, 25-23 match to 25
th-ranked Marian inside of the Marian Physical Education Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
Â
"This match was the polar opposite of yesterday (a victory over Northwestern Ohio)," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We passed alright but we couldn't find a kill. They were a very strong defensive team and ran an effective transition attack. We did not make enough plays to beat a team of their caliber."
Â
The Gray Wolves hit just .018 for the season while the Knights outblocked Lourdes 15-5 for the match.
Â
Marian scored the first four points of the match and Lourdes was never able to rebound in the opening set. The Knights started even stronger in the second, scoring 13 straight points on the way to an early 16-3 lead. The Gray Wolves led 12-3 early in the third set, but the Knights battled back, pulling even at 18 before eventually forging in front on the way to the win.
Â
Genessee Tate (West Covina, Calif./West Covina H.S.) led Lourdes with six kills while
Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) had a team-high 14 digs.
Â
Frannie Stephenson led Marian (20-3) with 11 kills while Vanessa Lay had a match-high 20 digs defensively.
Â
Lourdes (15-7) returns home Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Siena Heights. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
