Lourdes Suffers Season’s First Setback at Midway

Lourdes dropped its first game of the 2017-2018 season on Friday evening, suffering an 85-59 loss to Midway inside Marshall Gymnasium in Midway, Ky.

The Gray Wolves trailed by just four at the half, but the Eagles pushed the advantage to 11 after three periods and started the fourth on a 22-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Lourdes shot just 35.4% from the floor on the evening and went 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the free throw line while Midway connected at a 56.6% clip, including 8-of-12 (66.7%) from three-point range.

"We played a solid first half with much better defensive execution," head coach Summer Quesenberry said after the game.  "In the second half, we lost our defensive discipline and allowed too many weakly defended possessions.  Midway took advantage and was able to put together offensive runs that we couldn't bounce back from.  We didn't shoot well and combined with defensive lapses it allowed for an inflated score."

Midway led the entire way, but the Gray Wolves were within one, 23-22, with just over six minutes remaining in the second.  The Eagles pushed the lead up to six before taking a 38-34 lead into the locker room.

A three-pointer by Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indiana Lake H.S.) made it 44-43 with 6:42 left in the third, and Lourdes was still within two, 50-48, with 2:29 left in the period.  The Eagles went on a 29-1 run over the next seven minutes, spanning the quarter break, to secure the home victory.

Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) led Lourdes with 13 points while Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) was the only other Gray Wolf in double figures, finishing with 10 points.  LaTyrah Beasley (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher H.S.) led Lourdes on the glass with five rebounds as the Gray Wolves were outboarded 41-31.

"I know our team will learn and build upon this loss Quesenberry added.  "We have eager players who are hungry to improve and willing to work hard.  It is a matter of making the decision to be intentional with our actions."

Madison Jones and Timitryi Patterson led five Midway players in double figures, scoring 14 points each with Patterson grabbing a game-high eight boards.

Lourdes (2-1) will return home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas to begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
