Lourdes saw its three-game winning streak come to a close on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves suffered a 77-58 setback to Aquinas inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
"We weren't ready for the intensity of conference play and for just how slim the margin of error is when you play teams in the league," head coach
Josh Gibson said after the game. "Our attention to detail wasn't good enough and our effort and communication on defense were lacking as well. I will do all that I can to do a better job of having us ready to play on Saturday."
The Saints built a 19-point lead at halftime behind 69.2% (18-of-26) shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and finished the night shooting 56.6% from the field for the game. Aquinas went on a quick 9-0 run in less than three minutes late in the first half, pushing a seven-point advantage to 16 on the way to a 48-29 edge at the break.
Lourdes cut its deficit to 14, 50-36, five minutes into the second half before the Saints answered with eight unanswered points of their own. The Gray Wolves were unable to get any closer the rest of the night.
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) led Lourdes with 14 points while
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) added 12 more off the bench. Lourdes finished the game shooting 40% from the floor.
AJ Atwater led Aquinas (2-4, 1-0 WHAC) with 23 points, making seven three-pointers, while Arsenio Arrington added 12 points. The Saints shot 46.2% from three-point range, making 12 triples on the night.
Lourdes (4-2, 0-1) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, facing the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the UDM Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.
