Lourdes hung with Concordia (Mich.) throughout on Tuesday evening, but the Cardinals limited the Gray Wolves to just two fourth quarter field goals and tallied a 65-58 victory inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"We are playing much stronger team defense," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the game. "I was happy to have held Concordia 14 points below their season average. Offensively we had too many costly turnovers that ultimately led to 19 converted points and truly was the biggest difference statistically in the game."
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped out quickly, as a 16-2 run over three minutes opened up a 16-6 lead midway through the opening quarter. Â Lourdes led by nine in the final minutes of the opening period before a Concordia basket before the end of the stanza started an 8-0 spurt that carried over into the second.Â
Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake H.S.) stopped the run momentarily with a three-pointer, but the Cardinals followed with six more points to take a 28-26 lead. The lead seesawed back and forth before Concordia took a 38-37 lead into the locker room.
Â
Lourdes again built a six-point lead in the third quarter, only to see the Cardinals bounce back and take a two-point advantage into the final 10 minutes. The Gray Wolves went cold from the floor, making just 2-of-16 shot attempts in the final quarter, and did not make a field goal for the first 6:14 of the frame. Lourdes was within one, 59-58, after a
Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) three with 1:27 to play, but the Cardinals' Kari Borowiak, who had a team-high 22 points, scored the final six of the game to seal the victory for the visitors.
Â
Reynolds led Lourdes with 22 points, making five three-pointers, while Miller added 14 more. The Gray Wolves finished the game shooting 32.3% from the floor.
Â
Katherine Snow and J'may Simmons scored 10 points each for Concordia (5-2, 2-1 WHAC), giving the Cardinals three double figure scorers. Concordia shot 44.9% from the field and committed 21 turnovers, four on steals by
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.), but the miscues resulted in just 13 Lourdes points.
Â
"I'm pleased with our team's growth and improvement," Quesenberry added. "As we continue to focus on our team philosophy our defense will become tougher and our offense will execute more efficiently."
Â
Lourdes (3-3, 1-2) will step out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Sunday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Albion, Mich. to battle the Albion Britons. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside Kresge Gymnasium.
