Lourdes moved back to the .500 mark for the season on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves defeated Cornerstone 78-74 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for the team's first victory ever against the Golden Eagles.
Â
Last season Lourdes pushed Cornerstone to overtime at the Ebeid Rec Center, but in the 13
th meeting all-time between the two schools the Gray Wolves finally broke through.
Â
"I'm so proud of our team," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said afterwards. "Our team chemistry is really starting to come together both offensively and defensively. Cornerstone is a great shooting team and they were able to knock down a lot of contested shots."
Â
The game was tight throughout, with neither team holding a lead larger than six points on the night. Lourdes made 12 three-pointers on the evening though, including seven by
Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake H.S.), and committed just 11 turnovers, both of which played a large part in the win.
Â
Cornerstone shot 49.2% from the floor on the night, but went just 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line and committed 16 turnovers, leading to 16 Gray Wolf points.
Â
Lourdes led by as many as six, 33-27, midway through the second quarter before taking a 38-36 lead into the locker room. Cornerstone scored the first six points of the third period, and held a 58-56 edge heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
With the game tied at 65,
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) and
Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) hit back-to-back triples to put Lourdes in front by six with four minutes to play. The Golden Eagles responded, scoring seven unanswered points to retake the lead with 2:35 to play, but
Samantha Enck (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) answered at the other end with a jumper, and, following a defensive stop, added a lay-up on the next position as Lourdes forged back in front for good.
Â
Miller led Lourdes with 22 points, matching the highest output for a Gray Wolf this season. Green added 16 points while Semler scored 13 more for a team that shot 40.3% from the field. Lourdes also outrebounded Cornerstone 42-38 on the night, including 17-10 on the offensive glass.
Â
Jesse Sheridan led Cornerstone (5-7, 3-2 WHAC) with 30 points while Cass Vredvoogd added 14 points.
Â
"The team's fight and determination to overcome adversity led to them earning this WHAC victory," Quesenberry added.
Â
Lourdes (5-5, 2-3) takes to the road on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle 11
