Ninth-ranked Lourdes opened a seven-match homestand on Wednesday evening with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of Lawrence Tech at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"We certainly didn't play our best volleyball tonight, but we played well enough to get the win," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We made some nice plays to extend rallies and were able to run some balls down. I thought we ended the match hitting more efficiently than we had earlier on the night."
Â
Lourdes never trailed in a set the entire night, jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set.Â
Eric Ubior (Guaynabo, P.R./Wesleyan Academy) served up a 6-0 run to increase the lead to 12-4 and the Gray Wolves were well on their way to the first set.
Â
Lawrence Tech hung around in the second, and were within one, 18-17, before the Gray Wolves scored the next three points to pull away and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Lourdes slowly pulled away in the third, with a 5-1 run midway through providing the cushion.
Â
Zachary Hawkins (Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with nine kills and hit .368 for the night while
Evan Gebert (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) added seven more kills. The Gray Wolves hit .265 as a team for the night, including .333 in the final stanza as
Ian Fields (Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor H.S.) and
Ryan Ferkel (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly H.S.) both handed out 16 assists on the night.
Â
Defensively,
Colby Magorien (Agoura Hills, Calif./Westlake H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 13 digs while
CJ Rilveria (Kula, Hawaii/Kekaulike H.S.) added 10 more as Lourdes held a 37-28 advantage in that category.
Â
Alejandro Gonzalez led Lawrence Tech (0-9) with nine kills and six digs.
Â
Lourdes (8-3) will host the Lourdes Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Gray Wolves begin play on Friday hosting Missouri Valley at 1 p.m. before entertaining Warner at 7 p.m. inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
