Playing a ranked opponent for the third straight game, Lourdes wrapped up its three-game road trip with an 85-60 loss to 15
th-ranked Davenport at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"Davenport played with a lot of motivation on their Senior Day," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "It seemed like they took advantage of every mistake we made, and that's what good teams do."
Â
After falling behind 14-7 six minutes into the game, Lourdes responded with three straight triples, two by
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon H.S.) and another by
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) to take a lead of its own. Frazier's third three-pointer of the first half extended the lead to four, 24-20, with 7:41 to play before intermission as the Gray Wolves went 6-for-13 from long range in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
Davenport responded with the game's next 11 points as part of a 15-1 run to retake the lead, and eventually expanded the lead to 14, 43-29, by halftime.
Â
The Gray Wolves were able to get within 11, 51-40, with under 16 minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Panthers slowly extended the lead the rest of the way to earn the home court victory.
Â
"We have to limit our errors down the stretch if we want to finish these games, not just compete for 30 of the 40 minutes," Gibson added.
Â
Johnson led Lourdes with 20 points, making five threes, while playing all 40 minutes. Frazier never left the court either, scoring 14 points, including four triples, while
Malik Thurman (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins H.S.) added 11 points.
Â
The Gray Wolves shot 37.5% from the floor and committed 17 turnovers. Lourdes was also outrebounded 42-33.
Â
Kevin Rich led Davenport (20-6, 14-4 WHAC) with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Â
"We have four games left in front of us and we will work hard to finish the season the right way," Gibson concluded.
Â
Lourdes (4-21, 3-15) will begin its final homestand of the season on Wednesday, hosting Northwestern Ohio at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
