Lourdes made 10-of-20 three-point attempts on Wednesday evening and held off Northwestern Ohio down the stretch to earn a 71-67 victory over the Racers inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"I was really proud of our effort tonight," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "We had multiple opportunities where we could have folded towards the end and we didn't. At the end of the day, we made just enough shots and got just enough stops. We did a good job executing our game play and it is nice to see that execution pay off."
Â
The Gray Wolves built an early six-point lead, 19-13, but the Racers battled back with a 20-8 run, and took a 33-29 lead into intermission. The Racers made seven first half triples.
Â
Trailing 45-41 with just over 14 minutes to play in the game, Lourdes went on a 17-3 run over the next eight minutes, building a 10-point advantage.Â
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) made two threes and
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon H.S.) added a triple.
Â
Eight straight points by Lawrence Jackson in less than a minute allowed the Racers to pull within two before Frazier stopped the run with another trey. Leading 65-60 with just over a minute to play, Lourdes was able to make six free throws down the stretch. The Racers pulled within two after a Jackson triple, and, trailing by three with nine seconds left, had the ball, but committed their ninth turnover the game.
Â
Johnson made four three-pointers on his way to a team-high 22 points while Frazier added 15 points, all on triples.Â
Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) chipped in 10 points as well as Lourdes shot 49% from the floor and committed just nine miscues in the contest.
Â
Lawrence Jackson led Northwestern Ohio (16-11, 11-8 WHAC) with 25 points while Corbin Pierce added 13 more. The Racers shot 38.7% from the floor but 48.3% from three-point range, making 14 threes.
