Lourdes hung with the sixth-ranked team in NAIA Division II on Saturday afternoon before falling to Davenport on the road 76-64 at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves never led in the game, but were within four points of the Panthers in the fourth quarter after falling to Davenport at home earlier this season by 60 points.
Â
"I was really proud of our team's focus and defensive effort today," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said afterwards. "We pursued the boards well against a very strong Davenport team."
Â
It appeared as if Davenport was poised for the same type of performance in the opening quarter on Saturday, as the Panthers jumped out to a 21-5 lead. The Gray Wolves would score the final four points of the period to pull within 12, despite shooting just 18.8% for the quarter.
Â
After trailing by 13 still midway through the second, Lourdes went on a 7-1 run to pull within single digits, and eventually went into the locker room trailing by nine, 29-20.
Â
Daja Whiteside's (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.) layup with 5:50 to play in the third made it a one-point game, 34-33, but Davenport responded with the next eight points as part of a 16-5 run to push the lead back to 12. Again the Gray Wolves battled back, cutting the deficit in half with a 7-1 run to close the stanza.
Â
A jumper by
Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) to start the fourth made it a four-point game, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the remainder of the way. The Panthers led by just five, 62-57, with 4:10 to play, but slowly pulled away down the stretch to secure the win, and secured at least a share of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season title.Â
Â
Elayna Ackerman (Fremont, Ohio/Ross H.S.) and Whiteside both tallied double-doubles for the Gray Wolves. Ackerman finished with a team-high 16 points off of the bench, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor, while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Whiteside had 10 points and 10 boards while
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Gray Wolves shot 37.1% from the floor, and were even with Davenport on the glass though, as each team grabbed 45 rebounds, with the Gray Wolves pulling down 19 offensive caroms which led to 16 second chance points.
Â
"Unfortunately we made some rushed decisions offensively, committing 23 turnovers that contributed to 30 Davenport points, Quesenberry added.
Â
Mallory Sewell led Davenport (24-2, 18-0 WHAC) with 21 points, going a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line, while Molly Babbs added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers shot 37.5% from the floor on the afternoon.
Â
Lourdes (6-20, 4-14) will begin its final homestand of the season on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves host Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
