Playing its final non-league game before resuming Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action, Lourdes dropped a 5-1 contest to Taylor on Thursday afternoon at Winterholter Field in Upland, Ind.
Â
The Trojans took the lead in the bottom of the second with a squeeze bunt, then added three more runs in the third, two coming on a home run by Nathan Targgart. A sacrifice fly in the fourth put Taylor in front 5-0.
Â
Lourdes broke through in the fifth as
Kevin Suttles (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) singled home
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy).
Â
Pitching dominated the second half of the game, as neither team was able to push across another run the rest of the way.
Â
"We came out with low energy and a low effort," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "It took us four or five innings to get going."
Â
Taylor finished the day with just seven hits while Lourdes managed just six safeties against Trojan pitching.
Â
Colin Eggleson earned the win (2-0) for Taylor (11-10), allowing just two hits and the one unearned run in five innings of work, striking out five while walking two.Â
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), surrendering five runs and five hits while walking five and fanning three in four innings on the hill with the bullpen tossed four shutout frames.
Â
"Our pitching gave us a chance to win," Snow added. "We also played a clean game defensively, but our offense needs to compete from the get-go."
Â
Lourdes (4-13) will return to Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon to open a three-game WHAC series against Lawrence Tech. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m.
