Upcoming in Gray Wolves Lacrosse: Lourdes begins its 2017 season with three games in the Sunshine State of Florida. The Gray Wolves begin the year on Tuesday with a neutral site contest against Columbia (S.C.) before facing Ave Maria and Keiser in true road games.
Head Coach Paul Sieben: In his fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Paul Sieben has an 11-35 (.239) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves and as a collegiate head coach. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Sieben was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2016.
Series Notes: Columbia (S.C.) won the only previous meeting against Lourdes, 8-6, on March 4, 2016 in a game that was played in Louisville, Ky. This marks the second straight neutral site contest against the Koalas. Lourdes has never faced Ave Maria or Keiser in women's lacrosse.
Wrapping Up Last Season: Lourdes won a program high six games in 2016 on the way to finishing the year 6-10 overall and 3-7 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Gray Wolves finished in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. Lourdes qualified for the WHAC tournament for the first time in program history, falling 14-3 at Davenport.
Scouting Columbia (S.C.): The Koalas enter the week following a 14-4 victory at home against Asbury on Feb. 18. Columbia plays at Ave Maria on Monday before facing Lourdes. Kendra Blackstock leads the Koalas with 11 goals and eight assists for 19 total points while Tiffany Tororello has added eight goals and 10 points. In goal, Diamond Brown has played all but seven minutes, sporting a 10.23 goals against average and a .481 save percentage.
Scouting Ave Maria: The Gyrenes enter the week following a 22-14 loss at home against Davenport on Wednesday, and will host Columbia (S.C.) on Monday before facing Lourdes. Katelyn Sherman leads Ave Maria with eight goals while Sarah Wade has added six goals and seven total points. In the cage, Bianca Ballarin has played every minute thus far this year, sporting a 15.00 goals against average and a .302 save percentage.
Scouting Keiser: Keiser is still looking for its first win of the season after falling 11-8 to Wilmington on Feb. 27. The Seahawks host West Virginia Wesleyan and Lawrence Tech before entertaining Lourdes. Maria Johnson leads Keiser with six goals and seven total points while Frankie Parshall also has seven points with three goals and four helpers. In goal, Mary Reich has played a majority of the minutes, and has a 12.43 goals against average and a .487 save percentage.
Lourdes in Season Openers: Lourdes is 1-2 all-time in season openers after registering a 12-7 victory at Pikeville to open the 2016 season. The Gray Wolves had previously fallen at Baldwin Wallace (2014) and Lawrence Tech (2015) to open campaigns.
All-Conference Returnees: Hannah Cullis and
Alyssa Long both return for their junior seasons after earning Honorable Mention All Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors last season. Cullis recorded 41 ground balls on defense while Long scored 46 goals and had 54 total points.
Protecting the Goal: Kiley Ketteman has played more than 1400 minute in goal in her first two seasons, and enters the year with a 20.84 career goals against average and a .393 save percentage.
Captains Named: Lourdes has tri-captains this season.Â
Hannah Cullis,
Lolo Garza, and
Alyssa Long are serving as the leadership role. Cullis and Long are two-time captains while Garza is in her first season in that role.
This and That: Alyssa Long is four goals shy of 100 for her career ... Lourdes will face #8 Columbia (S.C.) looking for a first win ever against a NAIA top-25 team (0-25) ... the Gray Wolves have four freshmen on this year's roster.
