Lourdes opened a three-game weekend series with Madonna on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the Crusaders at Mercy Field by scores of 14-11 and 16-4.
Â
Madonna built an early lead in the opener, and despite Lourdes attempt to rally late, the Gray Wolves fell three runs short. The Crusaders plated two in the first, four in the third, and two more in the fourth to take an 8-0 advantage. Back-to-back doubles by
Glen Crabtree (Median, Ohio/Black River H.S.) and
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth and
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) added a RBI hit to pull the Gray Wolves within six.
Â
The Crusaders added three more in the sixth and two in the seventh to build an 11-run advantage before Lourdes rallied again. Three unearned runs in the seventh extended the game as
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.),
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.), and Crabtree all had a RBI.
Â
After Madonna added a run in the eighth, Lourdes scored six times in the ninth.Â
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) had a run-scoring single and Crabtree hit a two-run home run. With two outs,
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) added pinch-hit bases loaded double, clearing the bases, but the Gray Wolves were unable to score any more runs.
Â
Crabtree went 4-for-5 in the game as Lourdes tallied 14 hits in the opener.
Â
Johno Rodriguez earned the win (5-2) on the hill, allowing four runs, two earned, and five hits in 6.1 innings while striking out four.Â
Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1), surrendering eight runs on five hits in four innings.
Â
Madonna again scored first in game two, batting around while scoring five times in the second. Lourdes answered with three in the bottom of the frame, as
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) singled home a run,
Dan Johnson (Westland, Mich./Franklin H.S.) had a RBI ground out, and Stanley scored on a wild pitch.
Â
The Crusaders added four more runs in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth, increasing the lead to 10-3 before Stanley's third hit, and second RBI of the game, scored Lourdes' final run in the sixth.
Â
The visitors sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth, tacking on six more runs to close the game.
Â
Alex DeYonker earned the win (2-0) on the mound, allowing just two earned runs and six hits in seven innings.Â
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (2-3), allowing 10 runs and 13 hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Â
Lourdes (6-16, 3-11) and Madonna (14-10, 7-3) will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday morning with first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Mercy Field.
