After suffering a late inning loss, 7-6, in game one of a doubleheader on Monday, Lourdes bounced back to defeat Goshen 6-4 in the nightcap at J. Harold Yoder Field in Goshen, Ind.
Â
"I thought we battled all day, and it was unfortunate we were only able to come away with one win," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "Overall I was pleased with our play on all sides of the ball."
Â
Lourdes scored in the opening inning of both games. In the opener,
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.). A run-scoring single in the second by
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) made it 2-0 Gray Wolves as
Ryan Kroll (Brownstown, Mich./Carlson H.S.) scored.
Â
Goshen responded in the bottom of the second, scoring a single run before taking the lead on a three-run home run by Clinton Stroble II in the third.
Â
The Gray Wolves tallied three of their own in the fourth as a triple by Crabtree plated two and he scored on a throwing error to give Lourdes a 5-4 lead. Denman's RBI single in the fifth increased the lead to two.
Â
The Maple Leafs answered with two in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Vincent Caschera to tie the game before scoring what would be the game-winning run on a hit in the sixth.
Â
Denman went 3-for-5 in the opener for the Gray Wolves while
Reilly Walters (Bowmanville, Ont./Bowmanville H.S.) had two hits as part of Lourdes' 11-hit effort.
Â
Travis Grimm earned the win out of the bullpen for Goshen with a scoreless sixth while Spenser Triplett earned the save pitching the seventh.Â
Kyle Sacher (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) for the Gray Wolves in relief.
Â
In game two, Denman again led off with a double and scored on a single by Riggs. Riggs then scored on the first of five Goshen errors in the contest. Two more Maple Leaf errors in the second led to a pair of unearned runs as the Gray Wolves increased the lead to 4-0.
Â
Goshen (21-22-1) scored single runs in the third and fourth to cut the lead in half, but Lourdes added two insurance runs in the sixth. Walters had a hit that plated two, the second coming on an error in the outfield.
Â
The hosts added a run in the sixth and scored another in the seventh, but stranded the potential tying runs on base in the final frame.
Â
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) and Walters each had two hits for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes banged out nine in game two.Â
Â
Jeremy Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Roosevelt H.S.) earned the win (1-1) in relief while
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) earned the save for the Gray Wolves. Seth Lapp started and went three innings, suffering the loss (0-1) for Goshen.
Â
"I was proud of our young guys on the mound competing and staying in the strike zone," Snow added.
Â
Lourdes (8-28) will continue its road trip this weekend with a three-game series against Aquinas. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Kimble Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
