Runs were difficult to come by for Lourdes on Saturday afternoon at Kimble Stadium, as the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Aquinas 10-0 and 3-0.
Â
Lourdes fell behind early in the opener, allowing the first five batters to cross the plate. Aquinas took advantage of two walks and an error in the inning while 10 hitters came to bat in the frame.
Â
The Saints added two more runs with two outs in the second to increase their lead to 7-0 before tallying the final three runs in the seventh to end the game.
Â
The Gray Wolves threatened in the third, loading the bases with none out, but failed to produce a run. Lourdes finished the game with just four hits against Jordan Wahr, who went the distance for the win (6-3). He struck out five and walked three.
Â
Jeremy Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Roosevelt H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2) on the mound, allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, and six hits in two innings of work.
Â
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) accounted for two of the four Gray Wolves' hits while Sterling Brinker went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead Aquinas' 13-hit attack.
Â
Game two was scoreless until the fourth when Aquinas produced a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The game remained a one-run contest into the eighth when the Saints plated two on a double by Brinker to add on insurance runs.
Â
Lourdes had a chance to score in both the fourth and seventh innings with multiple runners in scoring position, but could not drive them home.
Â
Walter Graf went all nine innings to get the shutout (4-3) for Aquinas, yielding six hits and just one walk, while
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), despite allowing just one run and two hits while striking out five in six innings of work.
Â
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lourdes (8-30, 4-22 WHAC) and Aquinas (22-21, 11-14) will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Kimble Stadium.
