Lourdes scored 13 times in the top of the seventh inning, and rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat Rochester (Mich.) 20-9 on Sunday afternoon at Shinsky Field.
Â
"I'm really proud of how we continued to fight to climb back in the game," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "After the rain delay we really swung the bats to complete the comeback."
Â
The Gray Wolves fell behind 8-0 after allowing a single run in the first, two in the second, and five more in the fourth.
Â
Lourdes finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth, batting around while scoring five times.Â
Dallas Riggs' (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) two-run triple started the scoring.
Â
After the Warriors added a run to increase the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth, the rains came, forcing a delay. Lourdes started quickly after the interruption, as
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) tallied a RBI single and
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) added a sacrifice fly to pull the Gray Wolves within two.
Â
A 13-run, 10-hit seventh inning allowed Lourdes to not only take the lead, but close the game early. Nineteen batters came to the plate in the inning, Riggs drove home three runs, and Crabtree had a two-run single while the Gray Wolves also took advantage of three Rochester errors in the frame.
Â
Zack Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) earned the win (2-1) on the mound, tossing two innings of one-hit relief after the rains came. Dylan Benson took the loss (0-1), giving up seven unearned runs in one-third of an inning for Rochester (8-32, 4-24 WHAC).
Â
Riggs and Crabtree finished with five RBI each while both, along with Gallo and
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) had three hit games as the Gray Wolves pounded out 19 hits in the contest.
Â
Lourdes (11-33, 7-23) will return home to Mercy Field to close out the 2017 season with a three-game series with Cornerstone. The series opener is set for Thursday at 3 p.m.
