After dropping the opener 8-5 and trailing 9-3 in game two, Lourdes scored 12 runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a split with Siena Heights, winning the nightcap 16-9 at Mercy Field.
Â
"I'm proud of how we competed today," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "Offensively we did a nice job all day of getting runners on base. The difference in the games was the timely hit. In game one we didn't get them, in game two we did."
Â
Siena Heights took the lead in the third inning of game two, scoring four runs, two of which were unearned. The Gray Wolves got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) double and added two more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) and a single by
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.).
Â
The Saints rebuilt their advantage, plating three in the fifth along with single runs in the sixth and seventh before Lourdes mounted their big rally.
Â
The Gray Wolves sent 16 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring 12 times. Stanley had four RBI in the inning, giving him five for the afternoon, connecting on a double and single.Â
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) added a two-run single in the inning and
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) drove in runs in each at bat in the frame with a walk and was hit by a pitch.Â
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly in the frame as well.
Â
A Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) single in the eighth closed out the scoring in game two.
Â
Denman and Gallo each had three hits as part of Lourdes' 18-hit attack.Â
Jake Tucker (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) picked up his first win (1-0) in relief, pitching the seventh inning, while Robert Oliver III suffered the loss (1-1), allowing five runs, two of which were earned, and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Â
"Free bases (seven walks) hurt us on the mound, but we managed to throw up zeros when we needed to," Snow added.
Â
Lourdes took the lead in the opening inning of game one on a RBI single by
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.). The Saints scored five times in the fifth to take the lead though, batting around.
Â
A RBI single by
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) in the fifth and two runs in the sixth, one on an error and another on a hit by Barker, pulled the Gray Wolves within one, 5-4.
Â
Siena Heights extended its lead in the seventh though with three runs, which proved to be insurance after Lourdes added a final tally in the eighth.
Â
Stanley had three hits in the opener while Denman added two more as part of a 13-hit effort.
Â
Kyle Kuhr earned the win (3-3), allowing four runs and nine hits in six innings while
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (2-5), surrendering five runs and five hits in 4.2 frames.
Â
"Rogge gave us four no-hit innings and unfortunately took a loss," Snow concluded.
Â
Lourdes (7-23, 4-16 WHAC) and Siena Heights (12-21, 11-9) will conclude their three-game weekend series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Mercy Field.
