A goal with just 31 seconds remaining in double-overtime pushed Cleary to a 2-1 victory over Lourdes on Saturday evening at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
"I thought we played as a team tonight and played well for the most part," head coach
Barry Spitzer said after the match. "Unfortunately, we just didn't win the match."
Â
Logan Bush intercepted a pass at the top of the box and slotted the ball to Noah Schneider inside the six for the match-winning goal as the Cougars overcame a late 1-0 deficit to earn the victory. Cleary had nine shot attempts in the two extra sessions, most from distance that missed the mark before the match-winner.
Â
The two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes before the Gray Wolves struck first.Â
Judah Goodridge (Brooklyn, N.Y./Dutchtown H.S.) sent a long ball through the Cougar defense which
Adilson Darosa (Pawtucket, R.I./Shea H.S.) collected at the top of the box before beating netminder Marc Hodges for his first goal of the year.Â
Â
Cleary (3-1) tied the match with 9:23 remaining in regulation as Schneider sent a feed into the box where Daniel Hector Lora sent a blast into the back of the net. The match would then remain even the rest of the way until the final seconds of the second overtime.
Â
Cleary finished the match with a 26-9 shot advantage, but held just a slim 5-4 edge in shots on frame. Hodges made three saves in goal for the Cougars while
Jose Cedillo (Monterrey, Mexico/Norcross H.S.) made three stops for the Gray Wolves. Cleary also had an 8-2 edge in corner opportunities.
Â
The match saw a total of 31 fouls and nine yellow cards handed out, including six to Cleary.

Lourdes (0-1-1) will take to the road for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Wyoming, Mich. to battle Grace Bible. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Velting Field.
