Judah Goodridge (Brooklyn, N.Y./Dutchtown H.S.) scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the match, and that proved to be enough offense for Lourdes on Wednesday, as the Gray Wolves defeated Aquinas 2-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
"This was a big win for us," head coach
Barry Spitzer said after the match. "In this league, every conference match is tough. I'm happy with our play, but we know we need to keep improving."
Goodridge put the Gray Wolves on the board just 1:26 into the match.
Akilla Arno (Omaha, Neb./Northwest Magnet H.S.) played a ball ahead to Goodridge, who chipped it over the charging goalkeeper, Joseph Liblong into the net from 30 yards out.
Haggi Amirally (Kinshasa, Congo/Byron Nelson H.S.) slid a ball over to Goodridge inside the penalty area at the 14:58 mark and Goodridge finished low for his second goal of the match and sixth of the season to put Lourdes in front 2-0.
The match stayed that way into intermission with Aquinas holding a narrow 8-7 shot advantage.
Lourdes went a man down due to a red card with just over 20 minutes to play, and the Saints cut their deficit in half just over two minutes later. Franco Calabrese found the head of Jamey Cunningham in the box off of a set piece to pull Aquinas within one, 2-1.
The Saints hit the crossbar twice down the stretch, and
Jose Cedillo (Monterrey, Mexico/Norcross H.S.) made several big saves for Lourdes down the stretch as Lourdes won its third straight match.
Aquinas (6-3, 1-1 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 16-3 in the second half to finish with a 24-10 advantage, but Cedillo made six saves between the posts for the Gray Wolves while Liblong made just two stops for the Saints. Aquinas also held a 6-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Lourdes (4-2-1, 2-0) remains home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Indiana Tech during Homecoming weekend on campus. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
