After having its home court win streak snapped on Saturday, Lourdes began a new one on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Aquinas 25-17, 25-13, 15-25, 25-15 inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
The Gray Wolves limited Aquinas to just .078 hitting for the evening, holding the Saints below .060 in three of the four sets. Lourdes tallied 10 service aces, six by
Jami Markus (Oregon, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.), while moving into a tie with Aquinas in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.
Â
Four aces by Markus during a 7-0 run midway through the first set allowed the Gray Wolves to erase a 10-9 deficit and take the lead in the set for good. Markus and
Kristin Murrell (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) combined to build Lourdes a 13-1 lead in set two as the Gray Wolves tallied 13 kills and committed just two errors while taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
Aquinas held Lourdes to -.025 hitting in the third and slowly increased its lead throughout the set to extend the match to a fourth set. With the fourth tied at 12,
Sarah Wisser (Schoolcraft, Mich./Schoolcraft H.S.) served up eight straight points to put the Gray Wolves firmly in control.
Â
"I thought we played some sound defense and stayed in our system for the majority of the match tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We got out of our rhythm a bit in the third, but were able to regain it to close out the match against a solid opponent."
Â
Murrell tallied a double-double for Lourdes with 11 kills and 16 digs while
Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) tallied 35 digs in the four sets. Wisser had 21 assists and Markus added 16 while
Emily Arnold (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) finished with eight kills and seven blocks while swinging at a .389 clip.
Â
Payton Klein led Aquinas (8-8, 4-2 WHAC) with 11 kills while Marisa Spetoskey tallied 28 digs.
Â
Lourdes (11-6, 4-2) will take to the road for its next three contests, beginning on Friday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Calumet College of Saint Joseph. The opening serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT inside of the Rittenmeyer Center in Whiting, Ind.
