Siena Heights overcame a six-point fourth quarter deficit on Wednesday evening to defeat Lourdes 73-68 inside of the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves led 57-53 entering the final period and scored the first basket of the fourth on a
Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) jumper. Siena Heights responded with a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes, pulling in front 68-63 with 2:24 to play.Â
Â
A
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) triple and a basket inside by Jefferson with under a minute to play tied the game, but the Saints responded on the next possession with a layup to retake the lead. After a Lourdes miss, Siena Heights split a pair of free throws to increase the lead to three with 17 seconds to play. The Gray Wolves had one last chance, but came up short from the free throw line while the hosts made a pair in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Â
"We competed at a much higher level today," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the game.
Â
Lourdes raced out to a 9-0 lead to start the game before the Saints answered with 11 straight points as part of a 16-2 run, and led 19-14 after 10 minutes. The Gray Wolves scored the first 14 points of the second quarter, eight coming from
Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake H.S.), building a 28-19 advantage. The Saints responded with the game's next 10 points, and the two teams eventually went into the locker room tied at 32.
Â
Lourdes led nearly the entire third period, and by as many as seven points, before taking the four-point lead into the final stanza.
Â
Semler and Miller led Lourdes with 14 points each while
Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) added 13 points off the bench. The Gray Wolves shot 36.4% from the floor and made 11-of-28 (39.3%) three-pointers in the game while committing just 13 turnovers.
Â
Addyson Tomczak and Azalea Miller led Siena Heights (11-8, 5-5 WHAC) with 18 points each while Alyssa Larson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Â
"We talked all week in regards to the board battle and that whoever won the war on the glass would win the game," Quesenberry stated. "Siena Heights outrebounded us 49-40 and ultimately that made the difference between winning and losing a closely matched game."
Â
Lourdes (7-10, 2-8) will begin the second half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
