Cornerstone showed why it is the top-ranked team in NAIA Division II on Wednesday evening, jumping out to a 25-point halftime lead on the way to an 82-52 victory over Lourdes inside of Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Lourdes struggled offensively early, making just two of its first 21 shot attempts, and the Golden Eagles built a 29-7 lead with three minutes to play in the first half. Cornerstone carried a 41-16 lead into the locker room after the Golden Eagles shot 53.6% from the floor in the opening stanza.
Â
The Gray Wolves were never able to make a run in the second half, as a 16-6 run midway through the final stanza pushed a 25-point advantage to 65-30, the largest of the game for the Golden Eagles. Lourdes cut the deficit to 28, 70-42, with four minutes to play after a layup by
Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall H.S.), but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way.
Â
Jones was the lone Gray Wolf to tally double figures on the evening, scoring 13 points while adding three steals defensively.Â
Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview H.S.) and
Bryce McComb (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) added eight points each for Lourdes.
Â
Sam Vander Sluis and Michael Bradshaw led Cornerstone (20-3, 12-1) with 15 points each while Kyle Steigenga added 13 more. Vander Sluis also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds as the Golden Eagles finished with a 45-25 rebounding advantage.
Â
Lourdes (10-12, 3-10) returns home on Saturday afternoon to entertain fifth-ranked Indiana Tech. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
