Lourdes closed out a three-game road trip on Wednesday evening, suffering a 77-50 defeat to Cornerstone inside of Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves were held to just 28.6% shooting from the floor, including 4-of-25 (16%) from three-point range, and committed 24 turnovers in the defeat. Cornerstone scored 40 points in the paint and made 30-of-37 (81.1%) from the free throw line.
Â
"Tonight we just didn't play great team defense," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said afterwards. "Our rotations were slow and lackluster, putting us in foul trouble and contributing to 30 points for Cornerstone from the free throw line. We also had 24 turnovers, many of which were unforced. Tonight's shooting performance may have been the worst of the season."
Â
LaTyrah Beasley (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher H.S.) had a double-double to lead Lourdes, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.Â
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) added 11 points for the Gray Wolves.
Â
After surrendering the first six points of the game, Lourdes battled back to close within one, 13-12, after
Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) scored on a fastbreak to open the second quarter. Cornerstone answered with the game's next 10 points as part of a 13-1 run to build a double figure lead, holding Lourdes without a field goal for nearly five minutes.
Â
Lourdes was never able to cut its deficit to single digits the rest of the game, and trailed at halftime 38-22. A 13-2 Golden Eagle run over four minutes in the third quarter pushed the hosts' advantage to 25, 58-33. Cornerstone put the game out of reach in the fourth, holding Lourdes without a field goal for more than four minutes as part of a 10-1 spurt.
Â
Cass Vredevoogd led Cornerstone (14-9, 9-4 WHAC) with 20 points and seven rebounds while Taylor Richards added 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
Â
"We have to play better down the stretch if we want an opportunity to compete in the conference tournament," Quesenberry added.
Â
Lourdes (8-13, 2-11) returns home on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves entertain eighth-ranked Indiana Tech. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
