Third Quarter the Difference as Concordia Downs Lourdes

Concordia (Mich.) outscored Lourdes by 14 points in the third quarter on Wednesday evening, and that proved to be the difference as the Cardinals erased a six-point halftime deficit on the way to a 73-63 victory over the Gray Wolves inside of Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"We played tough today," head coach Summer Quesenberry said after the match.  "We had a terrible third quarter and had some defensive miscues that allowed them to outscore us 23-9.  Those 10 minutes proved to be absolutely critical in the outcome of the game."

Lourdes started strong, and never trailed in the opening quarter.  The Gray Wolves led by as many as five, 10-5, after a Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) basket midway through the period.  Concordia was able to pull even at 18 just before the end of the stanza.

The Gray Wolves fell behind 28-23 midway through the second quarter before a 7-2 run allowed Lourdes to tie the game following a shot in the paint by Tiera Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford H.S.).  Trailing by three late in the stanza, the Gray Wolves scored 11 unanswered points before a Cardinal basket just before intermission allowed Lourdes to take a 41-35 lead into the locker room.

Concordia came out the third quarter and scored the first seven points to take the lead, part of a 12-2 run.  Concordia slowly extended its advantage, pushing the lead to eight, 58-50 following a triple at the end of the period.

Lourdes was able to close to within four, 61-57, with just under five minutes to play, but eight straight points by the hosts allowed the Cardinals to pull away and secure the victory.

"When we discuss end of game outcomes, we add up our controllables such as free throws, turnovers, and rebounds.  Tonight the controllables revealed 10 missed free throws, 10 second chance points allowed, and 12 points they scored off our turnovers.  That is 32 points we contributed to Concordia.  Those three stats have been our focus our entire season and have often been the difference in our wins and losses."

Reynolds led Lourdes offensively with 21 points, making 5-of-9 from three-point range.  LaTyrah Beasley (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher H.S.) added 16 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake H.S.) added 11 points.

The Gray Wolves were unable to capitalize on a season-low 10 turnovers, as they shot 39% from the line and just 50% (10-of-20) from the free throw line.  Lourdes was also outrebounded 44-34.

Kari Borowiak led Concordia (17-9, 10-6 WHAC) with 25 points and six assists while Katherine Snow added 18 more.  J'may Simmons pulled down 11 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Lourdes (8-15, 2-13) returns home on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves entertain Siena Heights.  Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
