Lourdes was within three points with under two minutes to play on Saturday afternoon, but Siena Heights would not allow the Gray Wolves to get any closer as the Saints registered an 84-79 victory inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"We played much tougher basketball today," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said following the game. "We responded well to moments of adversity in the game. We are making strides in our focus as well as our communication."
Â
Neither team led by more than three points in the first eight minutes of the game before Siena Heights hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to seven with 1:16 to play in the stanza. Lourdes responded with a pair of triples from
Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) to pull within 20-19 after one quarter.
Â
A Reynolds three midway through the second put Lourdes in front 24-22, but overall both teams struggled from the floor in the stanza, shooting under 30% each. Lourdes scored the final five points of the half to even the score at 29 at intermission.
Â
"I was pleased with our team's ability to string together defensive stops in the second quarter when we weren't shooting well," Quesenberry added.
Â
The lead went back and forth in the third quarter, with Lourdes holding a two-point lead 44-42, after a pair of free throws from
Daija Stafford (Louisville, Ky./Moore H.S.). Siena Heights went on a 14-4 run to build an eight-point lead nearing the end of the half before
Kali Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) drained a three-pointer to make it 56-51 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
Siena Heights pushed the lead to nine with the first two buckets of the final stanza before Lourdes slowly clawed back. Another triple by Hardy with 1:52 left made it 73-70, but the Saints would make nine free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Â
Reynolds led Lourdes with 23 points while
Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) added 11 points and six assists. The Gray Wolves finished the game shooting 37.5% from the floor while committing just 12 turnovers.
Â
Clara Waidley led five players in double figures with 22 points for Siena Heights (16-11, 9-8 WHAC) while Demi Russell added 14 more. Alyssa Larson grabbed 11 rebounds as the Saints held a 41-38 advantage on the glass.
Â
"Overall, when we discuss our controllables, we gave them too many points in second chance opportunities and it proved to be the biggest difference in the game," Quesenberry concluded.
Â
Lourdes (8-16, 2-14) remains home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Madonna. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
