Silveira Tallies First Career Goal as Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 at Cleary

Sophomore Jose Esteves Silveira (Sao Bernardo Do Campo, Brazil/Barao De Maua) netted his first career goal to lead the Lourdes men's soccer team as it dropped a 3-1 decision at Cleary on Wednesday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.

"Cleary played a great game," said head coach Barry Spitzer following the contest. "We got out to a slow start and were able to battle back late in the second half. We just didn't give ourselves enough time or create enough opportunities."

Lourdes found itself behind 3-0 during the first half as Cleary (3-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 WHAC) knocked in goals in the 18th, 20th and 39th minute to take a commanding lead through 40 minutes of play.

Silveira was able to help shift momentum towards the visitors in the 42nd minute as he netted his first career goal and helped Lourdes pull within 3-1 at the intermission.

The Gray Wolves held the advantage in shots during the second half, edging Cleary 8-7. Lourdes was unable to capitalize as the Cougars went on to claim a 3-1 victory.

Freshman Garrett Baxley (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) earned the start between the posts, going 54:23 and recording three saves. Fellow freshman Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau (La.)) played the final 35:37 of the contest and added a save for the Gray Wolf defense.

The Gray Wolves (2-6-1 overall, 1-2-1 WHAC) will return to the pitch on Saturday at 12 p.m. as they play the second of three consecutive road games and meet Aquinas in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
