The Lourdes men's basketball team tipped off the 2018-19 campaign on Halloween and picked up an 83-69 victory over East-West University on Wednesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
The Gray Wolves move to an impressive 8-1 all-time in home openers and remain perfect at 3-0 at the Ebeid Recreation Center in home openers.
"It's always nice to open the season with a win," said head coach
Josh Gibson following the contest. "I think we were well balanced offensively having multiple guys in double figures. When we are able to do that, we see a lot of positives. It's nice to finally get a real game in and see the things we work on in practice and learn what we can improve on. Overall I'm proud of the way we fought."
Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) led four players in doubles-figures with a career-high 25 points, including shooting a blistering 12-of-12 from the charity stripe. The guard also added two steals and four rebounds.
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) each added 13 points and
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon (Spring Hill)) added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc. Snow also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
East-West (0-4 overall) was led by Sherman Carter's 14 points.
"We have to give East-West some credit tonight," said Gibson. "They attacked the rim well and forced us to defend."
The Gray Wolves were able to stretch their lead to as many as nine points on multiple occasions during the first half. After a free throw for the Phantoms closed the gap to 32-28 with 44 seconds remaining in the first half, Lauf was able to extend the lead to 34-28 heading into the intermission with a layup with 21 seconds remaining in the half.
Lourdes saw its lead blossom to 25 points in the second half as it opened the second stanza on a 26-7 run.
East-West was able to climb within 12 points but the Gray Wolves sunk 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute of the contest to seal the victory.
Lourdes shot 46.9% from the field, including an impressive 9-for-18 (50.0%) from three-point range.
The Gray Wolves (1-0 overall) are back in action this Friday at 5:30 p.m. as they take on No. 2-ranked Indiana East in the opening round of the Bernie Holowicki Classic.
