Lourdes gave second-ranked Indiana East all it could handle on Friday evening before suffering a 90-85 double-overtime setback to the Red Wolves inside of The Activities Center in Livonia, Mich. on the first night of the Bernie Holowicki Classic.
 
"I'm proud of the team and the effort they brought to the game tonight," head coach Josh Gibson said afterwards.  "I believe that we are capable of any team that we face if we play to our potential.  Hopefully tonight's game makes us hungry to win tomorrow."
 
The Gray Wolves fell behind early, before battling back to give themselves a chance to win both late in regulation as well as in the extra sessions.  Indiana East was in front the entire opening 20 minutes, and built a 33-22 lead with under three minutes to play before intermission before the Gray Wolves scored nine of the final 11 points of the stanza to pull within four, 35-31, at the break.
 
Trailing 44-36 early in the second, Lourdes went on an 11-1 run, capped by a lay-in from Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) to take its first lead of the game with 11:13 remaining.  The Red Wolves pulled back in front, and led by five, 54-49.  A three-pointer by Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) finished a 13-3 run by the Gray Wolves that put Lourdes in front by five with under three minutes remaining.
 
A basket by Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview H.S.) with just under a minutes left gave Lourdes its largest lead, 67-60, but Indiana East rallied, and tied the game at 68 on a triple by Bishop Smith with 5.1 seconds remaining to force overtime.
 
Snow put Lourdes up two with under a minute to play in the first overtime but the Red Wolves answered on their ensuing possession and the Gray Wolves' chance to win in the closing seconds missed the mark, forcing a second extra session tied at 78.
 
Indiana East (2-0) led the entire second overtime, scoring eight of the first 10 points to build a six-point edge with just over a minute to play.  A Snow triple with 14 seconds left cut the lead to one, but the Red Wolves made all four free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the win.
 
Snow led the Gray Wolves with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Lauf added 21 points and eight assists.  Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall H.S.) poured in 19 points and Martin tallied 10 as four Lourdes players finished in double figures.  The Gray Wolves shot 44.6% from the floor.
 
Smith led Indiana East with 17 points while Aaron Thomas added 15 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.  The Red Wolves shot 45.2% from the field on the night.
 
Lourdes (1-1) will close out play at the Bernie Holowicki Classic, hosted by Madonna, on Saturday afternoon, battling East-West.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside of The Activities Center.
