Women’s Basketball Drops Hard-Fought 77-70 Decision to Rochester

The Lourdes women's basketball team fell 77-70 to Rochester (Mich.) in a hard-fought Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup on Tuesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
 
"I'm proud of the way we played tonight," said head coach John Kenger following the matchup. "Rochester is a really good team and they are receiving votes for a reason. I think we were really competitive and made some great runs towards the end of the game. We need to clean some things up on the boards but I think we played well overall tonight."
 
After nailing a three-pointer to score the contests first bucket, Jami Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch) went on the score the Gray Wolves first seven points as Lourdes opened a 7-6 lead.
 
With Lourdes holding a 13-10 lead with 3:39 left in the first quarter, Rochester (8-2, 3-1 WHAC) closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 17-13 lead through one period.
 
Trailing 28-21 with 4:25 remaining in the first half, Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) hit back-to-back three-pointers for Lourdes to cut the gap to 31-27 with 1:37 left in the half. Keyvona Davis (Columbus, Ohio/South) was able to corral an offensive board and beat the buzzer with a layup to help the Gray Wolves pull within 37-31 at the intermission.
 
After the two teams exchanged buckets to open the third quarter, a pair of free throws from Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) and a three-pointer from Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) forced a Rochester timeout as Lourdes closed the gap to 42-40.
 
The Gray Wolves were able to pull within 52-51 following four straight free throws from Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) late in the third quarter, but the visiting Warriors would carry a 13-2 run into the fourth quarter to take a 65-53 lead.
 
Rochester held a 10-12 point lead for the remainder of the game as it went on to claim the 77-70 victory. Devan Valko scored a game-high 22 points, while Rio Dudgeon added 19 points. Rikki Scherdt pulled down 19 rebounds to lead the Warriors.
 
Miller led the offensive attack for Lourdes, scoring a team-high 17 points, while going 4-for-8 from three-point range. Hardy tied a career-best with 16 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
 
Rochester's hot shooting night featured 14 three-point field goals, while they finished 28-of-62 (45.2%) from the field. The Gray Wolves were 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field.
 
The Warriors outrebounded Lourdes by a 41-31 margin and took advantage of its offensive boards, outscoring Lourdes in second chance points 25-12.
 
The Gray Wolves (3-4, 1-1) return to action on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Great Lakes Christian to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
