Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes hosts its second tournament of the 2018 season this weekend as the Gray Wolf Invitational takes place inside the Ebeid Rec Center. The 10th-ranked Gray Wolves will battle UC Merced and Cardinal Stritch on Friday before facing Webber International and Clarke on Saturday.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his seventh season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 123-55 (.691) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He has earned five conference Coach of the Year honors during his first six seasons at Lourdes. He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against UC Merced dating back to March 28, 2017. The Gray Wolves swept both meeting against the Bobcats last season, once at home and once in Chandler, Ariz. Lourdes leads the all-time series against Cardinal Stritch 8-6 dating back to Jan. 27, 2012. The Gray Wolves have won four straight meetings against the Wolves, including both last season. Lourdes was a 3-0 victor in the Ebeid Rec Center before downing Cardinal Stritch 3-1 in Saint Louis, Mo. in the NAIA National Invitational. Lourdes and Webber International are meeting for the first time in men's volleyball. Clarke is 7-2 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Feb. 17, 2012. The Pride won the only meeting between the two schools last season, a 3-1 victory in Dubuque, Iowa.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes extended its winning streak to eight consecutive matches with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 victory at home against Lawrence Tech.
Evan Gebert hit .500 with 15 kills while
Eric Ubior had 15 digs defensively.
Henrique Gehrke handed out 32 assists as Lourdes began its six-match homestand.
Scouting UC Merced: The Bobcats enter the weekend having won two straight matches after defeating Menlo in four sets last Thursday evening. Cole Smith leads UC Merced with 162 kills and is hitting .262 while Matthew Pelfini has handed out a team-leading 199 assists. Pelfini also leads the Bobcats with 99 digs this year while Jacob Shelton has tallied a team-high 36 blocks.
Scouting Cardinal Stritch: The Wolves have won six consecutive matches after posting a 3-0 sweep against Calumet last Saturday. Felipe Mello Oliveira has registered a team-high 120 kills and is hitting .297 while Joe Duda has handed out 307 assists. Zach Bohmann has tallied a team-high 62 digs while Philip Schick has recorded 49 blocks.
Scouting Webber International: The Warriors enter the week idle since Feb. 3 when they dropped their first match of the season in five sets at home against Cincinnati Christian. Webber International travels to Warner on Wednesday before heading to the Gray Wolf Invitational. Liam Gilchrist leads the team with 46 kills and is hitting .345 while Kyle Robertson has 92 assists. Christian Alvarez-Rivero has notched 26 digs while Jack Chemak has seven blocks.
Scouting Clarke: The Pride have dropped three straight matches after falling in five sets at home to Mount Mercy on Tuesday evening. Tim Doughney leads Clarke with 202 kills and is hitting .204 while Trent Weber has handed out 347 assists. Joshua Phalen has posted 179 digs for the Pride while Matt Gagner leads the way with 62 blocks.
Gebert Continues to Put Up Double Figure Totals: Evan Gebert tallied 15 kills last week against Lawrence Tech, his seventh consecutive match with 15 or more kills for the Gray Wolves. He has posted double figure kill totals in 10 straight matches, and 13 of Lourdes' 14 overall on the year. The only match he failed to reach 10 was against Fort Wayne when he put down nine kills.
A Big Block: Matt Mittry and
Brendan Brown have been regulars rejecting balls for the Gray Wolves. Mittry has 40 blocks, including 13 solos, on the year while Brown has added 30 blocks in just 30 sets, with 10 solos.
The Nation's Best: Lourdes currently leads the country in digs per set this season. The Gray Wolves have tallied 632 digs, the second highest total of any team in NAIA, for an average of 11.92 per stanza.
Also Among the Nation's Leaders: Lourdes is ninth among all NAIA men's volleyball programs tallying 11.45 assists per set while the Gray Wolves' .12.04 kills per set ranks 11th nationally. Lourdes is 14th in hitting percentage at .231 while their 1.90 blocks per set are 15th best nationally.
Individual Leaders: Eric Ubior ranks second in NAIA men's volleyball recording 3.49 digs per set on the year.
Evan Gebert's 3.83 kills per set are 11th best nationally, as is
Matt Mittry's .394 hitting percentage and
Brendan Brown's 1.00 blocks per set.
Henrique Gehrke's 7.76 assists per stanza place him 20th in the country.
This and That: Evan Gebert and
Eric Ubior are the only Gray Wolves to appear in all 53 sets in 2018 ... Ubior has double figure dig totals in seven of his last eight contests ... Lourdes is 1-1 against NAIA Top-10 teams this season and 16-46 all-time against ranked foes.
