Lourdes resumed Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play for the first time since October on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Lawrence Tech 7-4 and 6-5 at Mercy Field.

"Both starting pitchers gave us a chance to win today," head coach Jeremy Snow said following the games.

The Gray Wolves took the lead in the opener with a George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) sacrifice fly in the second and a RBI single by Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Bradshaw Mountain H.S.) single in the third.

After the Blue Devils cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, Lourdes rebuilt a two-run advantage in the fifth after Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) doubled, moved up on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

A two-run single in the top of the sixth allowed Lawrence Tech to tie the game, but Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) answered with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the inning, his seventh round-tripper of the season.

Starter Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) departed with the lead after six solid innings, allowing the three runs on nine hits, but the bullpen could not hold the advantage.  Lawrence Tech scored four runs in the eighth off three different Gray Wolf relievers to earn the win.

"Free baserunners via walks and hit batters by the bullpen were the difference in the game," Snow stated.

Kyle Sacher (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2), allowing two runs in just over an inning of work.  Simon Lidwell earned the win (2-1) with three scoreless innings of relief for Lawrence Tech, allowing just one hit.

Crabtree and Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes was outhit 13-8 in the opener.

In game two Lourdes against took the early lead.  A RBI double by Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) plated the first run and Dan Johnson (Westland, Mich./Franklin H.S.) added a run-scoring single as the Gray Wolves had a 2-0 lead after four innings.

Lawrence Tech responded with three runs in the fifth, only to see the Gray Wolves tie the game in the bottom of the frame as Gallo delivered another RBI hit.

The Blue Devils retook the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh, but Lourdes tied the game in the eighth.  Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) had a RBI double, his second extra base hit of the game after tripling in the fourth, and Stanley tied the game with a two-out single to center.

A two-out hit by Lawrence Tech in the top of the ninth proved to be the game-winner though.

"Our offense did a great job of competing in game two," Snow added.  "It was a back-and-forth game throughout."

Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) struck out eight batters in 5.1 innings of work, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, and five hits in 5.1 innings on the hill.  Ryan Kroll (Brownstown, Mich./Carlson H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1), pitching the ninth inning.  James Castiglione earned the win (1-3) with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Gallo had four hits to lead Lourdes' 15-hit attack while Denman had three hits.  Stanley, Pastor, and Gottschalk each had two hits as well.

Lourdes (11-9, 3-5 WHAC) and Lawrence Tech (19-9, 8-3) will wrap up their three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Mercy Field.
