Men's Volleyball Heads to Iowa for Spring Break

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Tenth-ranked Lourdes heads west to Iowa for three matches, including a pair against NAIA top-five ranked teams.  The Gray Wolves battle fourth-ranked Saint Ambrose on Monday evening before facing top-ranked Grand View on Tuesday.  Lourdes closes the trip at Graceland on Thursday.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his seventh season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball, Greg Reitz has a 127-56 (.694) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  He has earned five conference Coach of the Year honors during his first six seasons at Lourdes.  He is the only head coach in program history.

Series Notes: Lourdes is 3-8 all-time against Saint Ambrose in a series that dates back to Jan. 17, 2012, but the Gray Wolves have won the last three contests against the Fighting Bees.  Earlier this season Lourdes posted a 3-1 victory over Saint Ambrose inside the Ebeid Rec Center on Jan. 19.  The Bees hold a 2-0 series edge in Davenport.  Grand View is 5-2 all-time against Lourdes dating back to March 3, 2012.  The Vikings have won the last three meetings, including a pair last year, one of which was at the NAIA National Invitational.  Grand View holds a 2-0 series edge in Des Moines.  Lourdes and Graceland have split a pair of matches in a series which began March 3, 2012.  The Yellow Jackets won the last meeting in five sets in 2015.  This it he first meeting ever in Lamoni.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes earned a four-set victory over Siena Heights on Wednesday night, defeating the Saints 14-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20.  Evan Gebert led the way with 17 kills while Matheus Andrade added 12 kills and 13 digs.  Henrique Gehrke (19 assists and 14 digs) and Ian Fields (29 assists and 11 digs) both had double-doubles in the win as well.

Scouting Saint Ambrose: The Fighting Bees have won six straight matches after defeating Mount Mercy at home in four sets on Thursday night.  Saint Ambrose hosts top-ranked Grand View on Saturday before entertaining Lourdes.  Scott MacGillis leads the Bees with 263 kills and is hitting .286 while also leading the team with 28 service aces.  Austin Royer has handed out 599 assists.  Defensively, Riley Anderson leads the way with 188 digs while Zach Schmidt has been involved in 50 blocks, including 11 solos.

Scouting Grand View: The Vikings have won four consecutive matches after defeating Clarke in four sets on Wednesday evening.  The top-ranked team in the nation travels to Saint Ambrose on Saturday before hosting Lourdes.  Tim Johnson Jr. leads Grand View with 152 kills and is hitting .296 while Alfredo Batista has handed out 417 assists.  John Chamone is the team-leader in service aces with 25.  Defensively, Batista also leads the way with 78 digs while Felix Champman has tallied 57 blocks, including 12 solos.

Scouting Graceland: The Yellow Jackets are still looking for their first victory in 2018 after falling in straight sets to Park on Thursday evening.  Graceland hosts Ottawa on Tuesday before entertaining Lourdes.  Keone Coronado  leads Graceland with 110 kills while Naone Passi has handed out 218 assists.  Kimo Rosa has registered 20 service aces.  Defensively, Jonah Poe leads the team with 145 digs while Trey Hunter has tallied 52 blocks.

Doubling Up: Lourdes had a season-high three double-doubles in the match against Siena Heights on Wednesday.  Matheus Andrade had his third of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs while Ian Fields also registered his third of the season, handing out 29 assists and recording 11 digs.  Henrique Gehrke posted his team-leading fourth double-double of the year with 19 assists and 14 digs.  For the season Lourdes has recorded 14 total double-doubles.

Beating the Nation's Best: Lourdes, which is currently ranked 10th in the latest NAIA top-10 poll is now 3-1 on the season, and have won three straight, against NAIA top-10 opponents.  All-time Lourdes is 18-46 against ranked opposition.  The Gray Wolves have never beaten a team ranked higher than fifth in program history though.

The Nation's Best: Lourdes currently leads the country in total digs and digs per set this season.  The Gray Wolves have tallied 839 digs, the most of any team in NAIA, for an average of 11.99 per stanza.  

Also Among the Nation's Leaders: Lourdes is second among all NAIA men's volleyball programs tallying 12.09 assists per set while the Gray Wolves' 12.66 kills per set ranks sixth nationally.  Lourdes is 12th in hitting percentage at .243 while their 1.96 blocks per set are 13th best nationally.

Individual Leaders: Eric Ubior ranks third in NAIA men's volleyball recording 3.30 digs per set on the year.  Brendan Brown's 1.07 blocks per set rank him eighth nationally while Matt Mittry's .396 hitting percentage is also eighth best in the country.  Evan Gebert ranks just outside the top-10 at 12th with his 3.84 kills per set.

This and That: Evan Gebert and Eric Ubior are the only Gray Wolves to appear in all 70 sets in 2018 ... Ubior surpassed 600 career digs against Siena Heights, and has 611 in his four years ... Lourdes will play an exhibition match at Goshen on Friday, March 9 to close out the spring trip.
