Lourdes began its nine-game stretch in the state of Florida on Monday afternoon, sweeping both ends of a doubleheader against Rochester (Mich.) by scores of 4-3 and 11-1 at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Fla.
Â
"It was great getting a couple of wins on our first day in the warm weather," head coach
Jeremy Snow said after the twinbill.
Â
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) was solid on the mound over the first three innings, striking out seven during the span, but the game remained scoreless into the fourth.
Â
"Matt pitched well and the bullpen did its job in game one, and we found a way to win," Snow added.
Â
Lourdes struck first with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth.Â
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) started with a double and
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) followed with a RBI single.Â
Dan Johnson (Westland, Mich./Franklin H.S.) added a run-scoring double before
Reilly Walters (Bowmanville, Ont./Bowmanville H.S.) made it a 3-0 game with a single.
Â
Rochester answered with three in the bottom of the frame, tying the game with a two-out, two-run single by Caleb Psycher, the only Warrior with two hits in the game.
Â
The game remained tied into the seventh when
Cole Cantelon (Langley, B.C./Brookswood Secondary) singled to lead off the inning and stole second. He moved to third on a single by
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) and scored on a passed ball.
Â
Rochester (3-6) put the leadoff man on in the bottom of the seventh, but
Adam Hoyos (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) registered a strikeout-throw out double play as Johnson gunned down his second would-be base stealer in as many innings. Hoyos picked up his first save of the year while
Kyle Sacher (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) earned the win (1-1) with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Â
"
Dan Johnson may have been the hero today, throwing out those two runners," Snow said.
Â
Austin Steinfort took the loss (0-1) for Rochester, allowing the one unearned run in 1.1 innings on the hill.
Â
The Warriors plated an unearned run in the opening inning of game two, but Lourdes immediately responded in the bottom of the frame.Â
Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.) had a sacrifice fly to plate
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) and
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Bradshaw Mountain H.S.) scored on a wild pitch as the Gray Wolves took advantage of two walks and a hit batter in the inning.
Â
Lourdes erupted for six runs in the second to break the game open. A two-run single by Righman, a sacrifice fly by Gallo, and a three-run home run by Crabtree made it an 8-1 game. Righman picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the third after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the fourth, Pastor tripled home a run and
Kevin Suttles (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) had a run-scoring ground out to complete the scoring.
Â
Sedrick Gonzalez (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) had two hits to lead the eight-hit attack for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) earned the win (2-1), allowing one unearned run and three hits in four innings while striking out four and walking seven. Jordan Eaddy suffered the loss (0-1), surrendering eight runs on three hits while walking five in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
"Our offense erupted early and Brown pitched well enough to win," Snow concluded about game two. "We got a lot of guys their first varsity action today which was nice."
Â
Lourdes (5-4) travels to Winter Haven, Fla. on Tuesday afternoon to face Grace in a doubleheader. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m. at Chain-o-Lakes.
