Lourdes Scores Four-Set Victory at No. 23 Madonna

Lourdes wrapped up a four-match road trip on Wednesday evening with a 25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 26-24 victory over 23rd-ranked Madonna inside The Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.

"This was a huge win for us on the road," head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards.  "We played pretty well throughout, even in set three where we lost and in a close set four.  We just were able to get a few extra kills in set four.  I really liked our teamwork for this win.  This is a great step for us."

The Gray Wolves hit a solid .258 for the evening, led by Tylar Roberson's (Elkhart, Ind./Central H.S.) 18 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.  Emily Drenth (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South H.S.) also tallied 18 kills for Lourdes while Monique Oliveira (Rio Branco, Brazil/Americo Rene Giannetti H.S.) added 11 more.

Trailing 8-6 in the opening set, Niki Polce (New Boston, Mich./Huron H.S.) stepped to the service line and ran off six straight points and Lourdes would not trail again in the set.  After Madonna tied the stanza at 12, the Gray Wolves scored six of the next eight points to regain control and take the early lead in the match.

Lourdes hit a blistering .375 in the second set while holding Madonna to just eight kills and a .000 hitting mark.  A 10-1 run behind the service of Carol Goncalves (Brazilia, Brazil/Sagrado Corcacao de Maria H.S.) and Oliveira gave the Gray Wolves an 18-9 lead on the way to a 2-0 match advantage.

The Gray Wolves scored the first point of the third set, but Madonna responded and never trailed the rest of the stanza to extend the match.

The fourth set saw 12 ties and six lead changes.  The Crusaders led 24-22 before Lourdes rallied with four straight points to earn their 15th win all-time against a NAIA top-25 foe.

Goncalves handed out 48 assists and recorded 13 digs while Goncalves added 16 digs as both tallied double-doubles.  Polce had a match-high 20 digs while Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) added 16 digs as Lourdes finished with an 82-67 advantage in that statistical category.  Emily Arnold (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) was involved in six blocks.

Jody Kelly, Lauren Korth, and Erica LeBaera all had 12 kills to lead Madonna (11-2, 3-1 WHAC) while Alyssa Facione tallied 19 digs.

Lourdes (7-1, 4-1) returns home to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Friday evening to host Siena Heights.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
