Lourdes saved three set points in the second set and two match points in the fourth before rallying to post a 23-25, 29-27, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9 victory over Siena Heights on Friday evening inside a loud Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

With the victory, the Gray Wolves moved into sole possession of first place by one-half game over Aquinas and Lawrence Tech.

"This was a very important win for us tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "There were some great rallies back and forth with both teams making great swings and digs. We just kept battling and had nearly the entire roster involved and everyone contributed. Our fans got into the match at the right time giving us the support we needed late in the match."

Emily Arnold (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) hit .609 with 14 kills while
Evan Matheson (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County H.S.) added nine kills while hitting .471 to lead the Gray Wolf offense.

"Both of our middles played extremely well offensively," Reitz added.Â
Emily Arnold lit it up and Evan had a strong offensive night as well."

The opening set was tight throughout, with Lourdes holding a 20-17 lead before four straight points allowed the Saints to pull in front. Siena Heights took advantage of five Lourdes service errors in the set, including one on set point.

The Gray Wolves came from behind to pull out the second set. Trailing 24-21, Lourdes saved four set points to even the stanza, and eventually earned the victory on a service ace by
Emily Drenth (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South H.S.) to even the match.

Lourdes jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third, only to see a 10-1 run by the Saints put the visitors in front for good. Lourdes pulled within one, 20-19, before the Saints ran off the final five points.

Lourdes hit .233 in the fourth and held Siena Heights to just .068, but the Gray Wolves still needed a late spurt. Trailing 22-18, Lourdes fought back to within one, 23-22, before the Saints had a pair of match points. A Siena Heights service error and a block by Matheson and
Carol Goncalves (Brazilia, Brazil/Sagrado Corcacao de Maria H.S.) tied the set at 24 before back-to-back kills from
Tylar Roberson (Elkhart, Ind./Central H.S.) and Goncalves extended the match to a decisive set.

The fifth set was all Gray Wolves, as the hosts raced out to a 7-3 lead, and limited the Saints to .000 hitting to improve to 25-2 all-time inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Arnold closed the match with her 14
th kill.

Roberson led Lourdes with 18 kills while Goncalves handed out 39 assists as the Gray Wolves hit .168 for the match.

Defensively, Goncalves added 18 digs for a double-double while
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) tallied 16 more. Arnold was involved in five blocks for the Gray Wolves as well.

Christine Tylutki led Siena Heights (8-4, 3-2 WHAC) with 18 kills and 15 digs while Bianca Negron tallied 24 digs.

Lourdes (8-1, 5-1) will return to the road on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves face Rochester (Mich.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside of Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
