Lourdes Rallies to Down Defiance at Home

Final Results

After falling behind 16-6 following the first four bouts, Lourdes rallied to pull out a thrilling 25-22 victory at home against Defiance on Wednesday evening inside the Franciscan Center Gymnasium.

"This was a much closer match than it should have been," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "While I am glad that we were able to find a way to win the overall dual meet, I'm disappointed in the way that we competed.  Having three starters out of the line-up is no excuse not to wrestle well in front of our home crowd."

The Yellow Jackets won the opening to matches in the lightweight classes with a fall and a major decision to take an early 10-0 lead before Nick Henneman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) posted a fall at the 2:24 mark of the opening period to win his 141-pound contest.

Defiance (1-6) earned another victory via pin at 149 pounds before Garret Anderson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) scored his team-leading eighth fall of the year at the 4:35 mark of the second to pull the Gray Wolves within four, 16-12.

After dropping a 6-5 decision at 165 pounds, Lourdes rebounded at 174 as Jake Bria (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield H.S.) earned a 13-4 major decision after jumping out to an 8-1 lead after the opening three minutes.

The Yellow Jackets scored another decision at 184, pushing the lead to 22-16 heading into the final two weight classes.  Lourdes already knew that Alec Moore-Nash (Price Hill, Elder H.S.) would win by forfeit at 285 pounds, essentially leaving the contest up to the final bout at 197.

Noah Nuno (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga H.S.) trailed after the opening period but rallied late to earn a 4-3 decision, securing the win for the Gray Wolves.

"We have a short turnaround time, but we will be ready to compete on Sunday against Marian," Kelly concluded.

Lourdes (7-8) will look to move back to the .500 mark in dual matches on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to battle 16th-ranked Marian.  The opening bout is set for 2 p.m. inside the Physical Education Center.
