Late Goal Lifts Lourdes to Win over Aquinas

Brendon Long (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows H.S.) scored his first career goal with just under eight minutes to play in regulation on Saturday evening, lifting Lourdes to a 1-0 victory over Aquinas at Wildcat Stadium.

Lucas Bosch (Las Palmas, Spain/Colegio Heidelberg H.S.) started the play with a corner kick that found the head of Cameron Poslaiko (Woodhaven, Mich./Carlson H.S.)  With the ball bouncing around in the goalmouth, Darius Passley-Bennett (Wimbledon, England/Petchey Academy) got a touch on the ball before Long finished with what proved to be the match-winner.

"It was nice to see the group get rewarded for their efforts," head coach Matt Johnson said after the match.  "We've been on the wrong end of quite a few close games this season.  It feels good to have things go our way in crunch time.  Credit the players for playing with confidence and continuing to attack throughout the second half."

The two sides played a fairly even match, with the Gray Wolves outshooting Aquinas (2-6-4, 1-3-1 WHAC) 10-8 for the evening, including 5-4 on goal.  Shot totals were even 4-4 in the scoreless first half.

Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fontainebleau [La.] H.S.) made four saves to earn his third shutout of the season, while Antonio Strassioto made four stops in net for the Saints.

Both sides also had four corner kick opportunities in the contest, with all but one of Aquinas' coming in the second half.

Lourdes (4-8, 2-4) will close out its three-match homestand on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves host Northwestern Ohio.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
