Concordia (Mich.) scored twice in less than two minutes on Wednesday evening on the way to a 2-1 victory over Lourdes, spoiling the Gray Wolves' Senior Night at Wildcat Stadium.
"This was a tough night," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "It took awhile for us to find any rhythm and get a foothold in the game. We got better as it went, but didn't ever quite put it all together."
Prior to the match, seniors
Risaiah Osborne (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown H.S.),
Reece Riccardi (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast H.S.), and
Tyler Rogers (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach H.S.) were honored for their contributions to the program over the past few seasons.
When the match kicked off, the two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, despite the Gray Wolves holding a 6-3 shot advantage, including the only three shots on goal.
Concordia (6-11, 4-6 WHAC) struck first in the 64
th minute. Following a restart, Christian Margilaj headed a shot in the box that was saved by
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fountainebleau [La.] H.S.), but Steven Soboslay knocked in the rebound for the match's first goal.
Soboslay scored again just 1:35 later, taking advantage of a turnover at the top of the box to make it 2-0 Cardinals.
Lourdes cut its deficit in half with 20:16 to play as
Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) sent a cross through the penalty area that
Darius Passley-Bennett (Wimbledon, England/Petchey Academy) received. He fired a shot that was deflected off a Concordia defender into the net.
The Gray Wolves were unable to find the equalizer down the stretch but finished the match with an 11-7 shot advantage. Both sides had numerous corner chances, with Concordia finishing with 10 and Lourdes with nine.
Chokr made one stop in goal for the Gray Wolves while Spencer Ward made three stops for the Cardinals.
Lourdes (5-12, 3-7) will close out the regular season on Friday at home as the Gray Wolves entertain Siena Heights. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
