Lourdes began its weekend trip to Grand Rapids, Mich. suffering a 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24 setback to Cornerstone on Friday evening inside of Mol Arena.

"We didn't play well enough to win, but go a lot better as the match got tight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We served pretty well but didn't defend as well as we needed to."

Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 19 kills while hitting .283, and added 11 digs defensively for a double-double
. Emily Drenth (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South H.S.) and
Allie Hale (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) both added 11 kills while
Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) registered five service aces.Â
Yasmin Assis (Salto, Brazil/Antonio Alves Aranha H.S.) handed out 44 assist running the offense.

Assis also had 13 digs while
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) had a team-high 14 digs defensively.Â
Cammy Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) was involved in five blocks.

The opening set was close throughout, with the Golden Eagles utilizing a quick 3-0 run midway through to build a 15-11 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish. Lourdes evened the match in the second set, leading wire-to-wire after jumping out to a 15-8 lead.

Lourdes led 19-18 in the third before Cornerstone (8-8, 5-3 WHAC) closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the lead in the match. After trailing 17-10 in the fourth set, the Gray Wolves forced a tie at 24-24 only to have the hosts score the final two points to secure the win.

Bailey Cummings led Cornerstone with 18 kills and hit .316 while adding 11 digs on defense. Patsy Morris led all players with 26 digs for the Golden Eagles.

Lourdes (8-8, 5-3) will remain in Grand Rapids on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves head across town to face Aquinas. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
