Lourdes returned home to Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday evening, dropping a 4-1 decision to Cleary in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Â
"We had some really good stretches of play and controlled the ball and the game for the first hour, but some mistakes in big spots did us in," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "We gifted them their first two goals, forcing us to chase the game. We need to get better at recognizing and winning those crucial moments that lead to goals."
Â
The Warriors took the lead with 23:29 to play before halftime when a turnover from Lourdes' defense landed on the foot of David Tetaj and found the back of the net. The tally gave Cleary a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, despite the Gray Wolves having an 8-5 advantage in shots at the break.
Â
Cleary (3-4, 2-2 WHAC) added to its lead 9:05 into the second half, as Johnny Cabral took a ball that trickled off the hands of goalkeeper
Ali Chokr (Bint Jbail, Lebanon/Fountainbleau [La.] H.S.) at the goalmouth, and scored to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Andris Klempert (Hamburg, Germany/Stadtteilschule Walddorfer H.S.) scored his second goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. He received a pass from
Ben Noud (Novi, Mich./Novi H.S.) to the right of the Cougars' netminder and found the back of the net with 27:28 remaining in the match.
Â
Cleary extended its lead on Tetaj's second goal of the contest, which came off an assist from Marcel Zanchin.
Â
In the final minute of the game, a Lourdes foul resulted in a Cougar penalty kick. Goalkeeper Juan Gomez put took the shot and converted for the final goal of the contest.
Â
The two squads finished with shot attempts deadlocked at 13, with Cleary holding a 9-6 advantage on goal. Gomez made five saves in goal for Cleary, while Chokr made six stops for the Gray Wolves.
