Lourdes was within six points of 15
th-ranked Taylor at halftime on Tuesday evening, but the Trojans used a large second half run to defeat Lourdes 86-40 inside of Odle Arena in Upland, Ind.
Â
Trailing 24-9 after the opening 10 minutes, Lourdes cut into its deficit in the second period. A three-pointer by
Baylee Baldwin (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) to end the first quarter started an 8-0 Gray Wolf spurt that pulled the visitors within 10 just three minutes into the second following an
Addie Conroy (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan H.S.) jumper.
Â
The Trojans pushed the lead back to 16, 32-16, midway through the second quarter before Lourdes went on an 11-0 run. Three-pointers by
Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.),
Erica Cary (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg County H.S.), and Baldwin started the spurt, which helped the Gray Wolves pull within six, 38-32, at the half.
Â
After Taylor (6-0) scored the first five points of the third period, Green scored to make it a nine-point game before the Trojans broke the game open. Taylor scored the final 20 points of the third and the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to take control.
Â
Lourdes went more than 16 minutes without a field goal before Green connected late, accounting for both Lourdes baskets from the floor in the second half.
Â
Green finished the game with 14 points, the most by any Gray Wolf in a game this season, while Baldwin added 11 points, all in the first half. Lourdes finished the game shooting 25% from the floor, including just 2-of-22 in the second half.
Â
Becca Buchs led Taylor with 24 points, including six three-pointers, as the Trojans finished the game with 20 triples as a team, shooting 52.6% from beyond the arc. Abby Buchs added 15 points and Meredith Deckard had 14 more for the Trojans.
Â
