Lourdes recorded its second road victory of the young Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season on Saturday afternoon, rallying from a halftime deficit to defeat Aquinas 63-58 inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"I thought we played tough in the second half," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We have to play 40 minutes or more though and make free throws."
Â
Aquinas jumped out to an early 12-4 lead five minutes into the game. Lourdes battled back, pulling ahead 19-17 after a
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) layup with 6:27 to play before halftime. The Saints responded with six of the next eight points to retake the lead, and carried the advantage into halftime, 32-26.
Â
A
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) jumper less than three minutes into the second half pushed Lourdes back in front, 35-34. A Welch layup at the 12:45 mark extended the lead to six, 47-41, Lourdes largest advantage of the day.
Â
A 10-2 run by Aquinas put the hosts back on top with under 10 minutes to play and the lead bounced back and forth until the game was tied at 54 with less than seven minutes left.Â
Â
Lourdes scored the next six points, capped by a jumper from
Julian Egbo (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.), to regain the lead, one it would not relinquish. The Saints pulled to within two, 60-58, with 34 seconds to play, but the Gray Wolves made three free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Â
Egbo led Lourdes with 18 points while Snow added 15 and
Kenny Coleman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) contributed 14 more to pace the Gray Wolves. Lourdes shot 55.6% from the floor to offset 18 turnovers in the contest.
Â
Davion Benton led Aquinas (1-7, 0-3 WHAC) with 15 points while Justin Lary added 14 more.Â
Â
Lourdes (4-3, 2-1) returns home to entertain 12
th-ranked Cornerstone on Tuesday evening. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
