Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Riding a five-match winning streak overall, Lourdes returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play over the next three matches, including a pair of contests this week. The Gray Wolves head to Siena Heights on Wednesday evening before hosting undefeated Aquinas on Friday night.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his eighth season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 145-61 (.704) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He has earned five conference Coach of the Year honors during his first seven seasons at Lourdes. He is the only head coach in program history.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 21-1 all-time advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Feb. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves swept the Saints in the Ebeid Rec Center last season, but Siena Heights snapped a 21-match skid against Lourdes in the season finale, winning in five sets in Adrian, Mich. The Gray Wolves hold a 8-1 all-time edge in Adrian. Lourdes and Aquinas will be meeting on the court in men's volleyball for the first time ever on Friday night.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes extended its winning streak to five on Friday evening with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 non-conference victory over Saint Xavier at home.
Evan Gebert led the Gray Wolves with 14 kills and hit .440 while
Ricardo Gehrke added 12 kills.
Matheus Andrade tallied 11 digs defensively.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have dropped two straight matches following a three-set loss at Aquinas on Saturday. Alex Garavalia leads Siena Heights with 157 kills while Emmanuel Chaidez is hitting a team-high .337. Keegan Crawford has handed out 503 assists on the season while Emilier De Jesus has registered 15 service aces. Defensively, De Jesus leads the team with 162 digs while Chaidez has registered 49 blocks.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints, in their inaugural season of men's volleyball, enter the week unbeaten all-time after sweeping Siena Heights at home on Saturday. Aquinas hosts Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Joshua Boothroyd leads Aquinas with 153 kills and 30 service aces while Zane Moothart is hitting .295 on the season. Colby Elder has handed out 539 assists for the Saints. Defensively, Josh Evers has registered 147 digs for Aquinas while Will Donald has been involved in a team-high 49 blocks.
Looking to Stay Perfect Facing Ranked Opponents: Lourdes is facing its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season on Friday against sixth-ranked Aquinas. The Gray Wolves are 3-0 against top-10 teams this season, having posted victories over Saint Andrews (Jan. 25), at Clarke (Feb. 8), and against Saint Xavier (Feb. 22), all of whom were ranked 10th when Lourdes faced them. Despite a 25-48 all-time mark versus ranked foes, the Gray Wolves have won 10 of their last 12 matches against top-10 teams.
Highest Ranking Ever: With Lourdes ranked second in the latest NAIA Top-10 Coaches Poll, this is the highest national ranking ever for the Gray Wolf men's volleyball program. Lourdes jumped from fourth in the previous poll, but had been ranked as high as third earlier this season, the previous high for a program ranking.
Making Quick Work: Lourdes has yet to play a five-set match this season, having last played a contest that went the distance on April 17, 2018 in the first match of pool play at the NAIA National Invitational. The Gray Wolves have swept their way to victory in seven of their nine matches this year.
Quarterbacking the Offense: Henrique Gehrke leads the NAIA handing out 11.24 assists per set this season. The Gray Wolves' sophomore setter has led Lourdes to a .306 hitting percentage as a team, a mark that ranks third nationally.
Putting Balls on the Floor: Lourdes ranks second as a team nationally averaging 13.03 kills per set.
Evan Gebert has led the Gray Wolves this year with 147 total kills, an average of 3.97 per stanza, a mark that ranks eighth in the NAIA.
Ricardo Gehrke also ranks 12th nationally with his 3.46 kills per set average.
Serving Up Aces: Jeff Lam has already tallied 17 service aces for the Gray Wolves in 2019, an average of 0.52 per set. The sophomore ranks 12th in the NAIA in the statistical category. As a team Lourdes ranks 14th nationally serving up 1.49 aces per set.
Playing Defense as Well: Lourdes has outdug all 11 of its opponents thus far this season, holding a 390-296 overall edge in that statistical category. The Gray Wolves' 10.54 digs per set ranks sixth in the NAIA this season.
Matheus Andrade is 10th individually in digs per set nationally, registering 3.00 per stanza.
Record Book Watch: Evan Gebert has moved into second place on the school's career kills list with 780. He only trails
Frank Craig's (2012-2015) 1,002 kills. Gebert also ranks fourth all-time with 49 service aces, one fewer than third place
CJ Rilveria (2014-2017).
Henrique Gehrke is now third all-time with 1,101 career assists, 22 behind second place
Steve Barcus (2012-2015).
Brendan Brown is second all-time with 260 career blocks, trailing only Craig's career total of 315.
This and That: Lourdes has not been swept in a match since Feb. 23, 2018 against UC Merced, a span of 26 matches ... the Gray Wolves are undefeated this season when tallying more kills and blocks than their opponents ... Lourdes has won eight straight matches inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
