A day after picking up a slim 2-1 victory at Siena Heights, the Lourdes university baseball team exploded for 10 runs to complete the series sweep over the Saints at the SHU Baseball Diamond on Tuesday evening.
Â
"I'm just really proud of these guys," said head coach
Jeremy Snow following the victory. "We really showed up in probably the biggest game of the year so far and came out and just competed. Our seniors really led the way for us tonight. George came up big with his first homerun of the season and Suttles got on base five times at the bottom of the lineup. Liam was great on the mound and it was just a great all-around performance for our guys."
Â
The Gray Wolves struck first in the top half of the second frame after
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central) sent a two-run shot to left center to give Lourdes an early 2-0 lead.
Â
An RBI single for Siena Heights (17-17, 7-7 WHAC) in the bottom of the third inning cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
Lourdes separated itself from the Saints in the fifth inning as
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) knocked in a pair of runs with a two-RBI double to push the lead to 4-1.
Â
On the ensuing at-bat,
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield) laid down an RBI double before
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford) plated Ammons with a single, extending the Gray Wolf lead to 6-1.
Â
After Siena Heights ended the Gray Wolf scoring run in the seventh inning, a
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales) double in the eighth plated a run to push the lead to 7-2.
Â
A Pastor sacrifice fly and a pair of back-to-back RBI singles from
Sedrick Gonzalez (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield) and
Kevin Suttles (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) in the ninth inning sealed the 10-2 victory for Lourdes.
Â
Liam Bloom (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton) earned the victory on the mound, going 6.1 innings and fanning three batters.
Travis Thompson (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) led the pitching staff with four K's over two innings of work.
Â
"I think we had great relief help tonight," Snow continued. "Our offense started to find its way and this was a huge conference sweep for us. With the season winding down we need to be able to win these games if we want another shot at the postseason."
Â
Lourdes (14-17, 8-6 WHAC) is back in action this weekend as it hosts 21
st-ranked Indiana Tech at Mercy Field in a twinbill. The first pitch in game one is slated for 1 p.m.
