Lourdes closed out the home portion of its 2019 schedule on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Madonna 12-0 and 17-3 on Senior Day.
Â
Between games of the twinbill the Gray Wolves honored the four members of this year's senior class:
Liam Bloom (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.),
Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.),
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.), and
Kevin Suttles (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.).
Â
"I want to thank all four of our seniors for their contributions to the program over the past few years," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "Unfortunately we couldn't send them out the way we wanted to with a victory."
Â
Madonna's offense tallied at least one hit in 15 of the 16 innings on the afternoon, and scored multiple runs in eight different innings.
Â
In game one, the Crusaders plated four runs in the opening inning and added another in the second to build a 5-0 lead. The Gray Wolves threatened with runners on third in both the second and third frames, but could not push across a run.
Â
Madonna added a pair of runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and the final four in the eighth to close out the win.
Â
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) had two of the Gray Wolves' three hits in the opener.Â
Â
Madonna (31-17, 14-6 WHAC) scored three times in the first and added three more in the third before Lourdes broke through on the scoreboard. In the fourth,
Braden Halford (Port Hope, Ont./Saint Mary's Secondary H.S.) dropped in a double down the left field line to score
Corey Righman (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley H.S.), who was a courtesy runner for Suttles, and Gottschalk, pulling the Gray Wolves within 6-2.
Â
After the Crusaders responded with three in the top of the fifth, Lourdes added its final run in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles by
Michael Davis (Whittier, Calif./California H.S.) and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) put runners on the corners before
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) delivered a RBI single.
Â
The visitors added two more runs in the seventh and pulled away with sixth in the eighth to complete the sweep.
Â
Gallo had two of Lourdes' six hits in game two.
Â
Lourdes (14-23, 8-12) will close out the season on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Concordia (Mich.). First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cardinal Field.
