Lourdes stepped out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action for the first time since returning from its spring trip, and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Point Park by scores of 6-4 and 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
Â
Point Park took the lead in the second inning of game one, scoring three times on just one hit, taking advantage of five walks and a pair of wild pitches in the frame. The Gray Wolves responded with three of their own in the bottom of the third as
Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) tripled home a pair and
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) added a sacrifice fly.
Â
The game remained tied at three until the bottom of the sixth, when
Michael Davis (Whittier, Calif./California H.S.) delivered a three-bagger of his own to plate
Noah Hayes (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek H.S.), who had reached base after being hit by a pitch with two outs.
Â
The Pioneers rallied in the seventh though, scoring three unearned runs while taking advantage of a pair of Lourdes miscues, to pull in front for good.
Â
Gottschalk also had a double in the opener as did
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.), as all four of the Gray Wolf hits in the game were of the extra base hit variety.
Â
Max Lojko (Barrie, Ont./ESC Nouvelle-Alliance H.S.) started and worked 4.1 innings, but finished with a no decision after striking out six and yielding just four hits and three runs. Ryan Huber earned the win (8-0) for the Pioneers in relief, allowing one run while striking out four in two innings of action.Â
Joey Oehlers (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) in relief for the Gray Wolves.
Â
After Point Park (20-13) score the game's first run in the second inning of the nightcap, Lourdes responded with the equalizer in the bottom of the frame.Â
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) delivered a RBI groundout to score Oehlers, tying the contest at one.
Â
The Pioneers took the lead for good with a single run in the third, and added three more in the fourth, three on a home run by Cole Horew. In the bottom of the fourth,
Sedrick Gonzalez (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield H.S.) doubled and scored one batter later on a
Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) single.
Â
Point Park added three more runs in the fifth and a single tally in the seventh before Lourdes scored one final run in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) singled home
Brandon Horman (Oregon, Ohio/Saint John's Jesuit H.S.) with the game's final run with two outs in the final frame.
Â
Oehlers and Gargus both had two hits to lead Lourdes' seven-hit attack in game two.
Â
Christian Negron earned the win (3-0) for the Pioneers, tossing four innings while allowing two runs on five hits.Â
Zach Sharp (Katy, Texas/Katy H.S.), making his first appearance of the season, suffered the loss (0-1), allowing five runs on seven hits and six walks in four innings of work.
Â
Lourdes (12-15) will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday afternoon for another non-conference doubleheader, facing league foe Concordia (Mich.). First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Cardinal Field.
