Lourdes opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling to Michigan-Dearborn 2-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn held a 6-1 shot advantage over the opening 45 minutes, but neither team could crack the scoreboard heading into halftime.
Â
In the second half, all three goals came in a span of 11:10. Freshman
Andris Klempert (Hamburg, Germany/Stadtteilschule Walddorfer H.S.) broke the scoreless tie with a flick over the goaltender's left shoulder to give Lourdes a 1-0 lead after receiving a nice feed from
Josh Varney (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) at the 56:31 mark.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn's Brendan Petz evened the match just 2:33 later after he took a pass from Jack Barnett as part of a combination play in the middle of the field and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at one.
Â
Lourdes had a chance to retake the lead four minutes later as
Farouk Amoo (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.) was fouled by Wolverine netminder Brian Ostapenko in the box, and was awarded a penalty kick.
Reece Riccardi's (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast H.S.) penalty kick attempt was saved, as the score remained 1-1.
Â
At the 67:1 mark, the Wolverines struck again. Obaidah Shaherli finished off a pass from Petz to give Michigan-Dearborn a 2-1 lead, which would prove to be the match winner.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn (2-3, 1-0 WHAC) finished the match with a slim 12-10 shot advantage with each team putting five on frame.Â
Garrett Baxley (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood H.S.) made three saves for the Gray Wolves while Ostapenko had four stops for the Wolverines.
Â
Lourdes (2-6, 0-1) will return to the road on Wednesday evening, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle Indiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Warrior Athletic Field.
